Jonathan R. Alger, President of American University, said this in a message to the AU community:

Expressing and advocating for deeply held beliefs is a core part of who we are as individuals and as a community. But when that advocacy becomes destructive and manifests itself in behavior that violates our policies, laws and values, it harms our community. It creates distrust and discord when we try to build connections and shared bonds. Even on the most polarizing issues over which members of the university community might disagree, engagement must be constructive and legitimate.

Glover Gate is both the front door to our university and a symbol of the AU community. It welcomes students when they first arrive on campus and is the site of countless graduation photos and treasured memories. We are cleaning and restoring Glover Gate and it will continue to serve and inspire our community.

I encourage everyone to reflect on this moment and look for ways to bridge differences and support the welcoming and inclusive AU community that is so important to all of us.

Statement from American University President Jonathan R. Alger

The university asks anyone with information about the people behind the graffiti to contact AUPD at 202-885-2999.
