According to GM Dan Morgan, the Panthers made the decision to move on from their star receiver weeks ago

The Carolina Panthers traded Diontae Johnson for a very mediocre return. Just a few months after their initial trade to get him, they decided to send him out to have a chance to move up a few picks on day three of the NFL Draft. This was reportedly a decision they made long before the trade.

According to The Athletic reporter Joe Person, who covers the Panthers, Carolina has told the rest of the NFL that they want to move on from Diontae Johnson. They immediately received a few calls before interest waned. The Baltimore Ravens recently swooped in and ended up getting a good deal for a starting wide receiver.

The Panthers will move up about 10 picks in the draft and will pay the bulk of Johnson's $3.5 million salary. Things finally changed after Johnson's final game in Carolina, when he said he “couldn't play every position” after taking the wrong route and causing an interception.

The team had already believed that Johnson's days were numbered. They really wanted to bring a gun for Bryce Young, knowing it could be a rental gun. It turned out to be extremely short. And obviously the Panthers are okay with that and don't get much out of it.
