CHICAGO (CBS) — Get ready for temperatures in the 80s.

After a mild start with temperatures around 60°C, we are on the way to record-breaking heat this afternoon.

The forecast high for today is 82 degrees, with the current high temperature record set at 78 degrees, dating back to 1999. That's over 20 degrees warmer than we should be this time of year. The average high temperature is 57 degrees.

Wind gusts of over 35 mph (56 km/h) will occur at times, causing difficult driving conditions and an increased risk of fire. A red flag warning has been issued due to dry weather conditions, strong winds and warm temperatures.

Temperatures will remain mild Tuesday evening with lows in the mid to upper 60s.

Wednesday will remain warm and windy, with temperatures once again reaching highs in the lower 80s.

The next chance of rain returns late in the day on Wednesday. Rain will then increase in intensity overnight, followed by persistent showers into Thursday morning.

Trick-or-treating is in the evening, then expect drier conditions with temperatures dropping into the 50s.
