A Missouri television reporter was injured by a stray bullet fragment Tuesday afternoon at a campaign rally for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Lucas Kunce.

The Kunce campaign hosted the event at the Democrat's private residence along with former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

According to the Kansas City Star, Kunce and other participants fired at a series of targets in his backyard during the event.

The injured reporter, Ryan Gamboa of KSHB-TV, suddenly began bleeding from his arm after being hit by shrapnel that ricocheted off a shooting target.

According to KSHB 41, Kunce was the only person firing at the time and quickly turned around to help the reporter.

Kunce, a 13-year veteran of the Marines, stopped the bleeding with his belt and wrapped gauze around the injury. The gauze was then replaced with medical tape and Gamboa was later examined at a nearby hospital as a precaution, according to KSHB 41.

The campaign event took place just two weeks before Election Day, in which Kunce will face incumbent Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.

Kunce has repeatedly referenced his military service throughout his run and in television advertisements, often using a gun.

Kunce trailed Hawley in the latest poll, with Emerson College Polling and The Hill reporting 40% support for the Democrat.
