A Florida man nicknamed “Lieutenant Dan” offers solid reasons why he won't abandon his 20-foot sailboat ahead of a Category 5 hurricane: “Boats Float”

Listen, I know absolutely nothing about boats, the water, captains, etc. I can swim, but I'd be lying if I told you that water that isn't a pool doesn't scare me. The only information I know comes from Captain Dave, who is brave enough to sail the high seas to Nantucket:

As a Miami resident and boating expert, I would ask him for comment, but I suspect he is letting me down. So I only have to rely on the knowledge I gained from him, and I can't say whether Lieutenant Dan is a genius or a madman. I tend to say both, and at least he's a smart man judging from what he said, he's not afraid and a woman is the only thing he'd give up his boat for. This is a man who knows what he wants. He almost lost me with the “boats float” comment, but the rest of what he said was legitimately sensible.

I wish Lieutenant Dan a safe storm for him and his boat, but judging from what he said about God having his 6 and his only fear being waking up broke, he may not even need it. He is the living embodiment of “A captain goes down with his ship,” for better or worse. But it is bigger than the seas. If the cameraman is so serious about getting him out of the water, the best option is to book a room in a hotel away from the flood zone and give him the best life possible while keeping his boat safe in a warehouse somewhere.

The optimist in me hopes the damage caused by this is minimal, especially after seeing things like this:

And I hope that after the storm we get to see a follow-up video from Lieutenant Dan that shows all of his belongings intact and will crown him a legend of the high seas for the rest of time. Stay healthy everyone.

PS Thanks to Bussin producer Jack McPherson for an additional video from Lieutenant Dan:

Get this man a woman for his boat as soon as possible. And remember: don't do anything stupid and we'll all be fine.
