My analysis
The UAB blazers are unique. Most small schools lose their best players to the transfer portal after a successful season, but the Blazers brought back everyone who could return.

That experience and depth didn't help much against Vermont. They allowed too many three-pointers and didn't show the same cohesion on offense as they did last season. The Blazers turned things around in the second half against Vermont, outscoring the Catamounts by 10 points in the final 20 minutes. UAB's shots started falling, but it wasn't enough to win.

They will need to bring their newfound offensive dynamism into tonight's game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, who have plenty of individual experience but not as a group.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a victory over Bowling Green on opening night. They are faster than the Blazers and can score from anywhere. Southern Miss did not return a single starter, but it does have three current starters with 19 years of college experience.

We'll see a fast-paced game tonight. Neither defense is going to box anyone in and I expect UAB to shoot. The Blazers won't want to suffer another halftime deficit, so I expect them to hang on against a smaller Golden Eagles group.
