Lucasfilm is adding an entirely new trilogy to its (for now) increasingly crowded slate of films star Wars Projects – one that could continue the fabled Skywalker saga with official episodes 10, 11 and 12.

Deadline reports that Simon Kinberg – producer of many of them X Men Movies, as well as, in the galaxy far, far away, Star Wars Rebels alongside Carrie Beck and Dave Filoni – has been commissioned to write the new trilogy and produce it alongside Kathleen Kennedy. The industry further reports that it has heard that this film trilogy could be the official 10th, 11th and 12th installments of the Skywalker saga, which consists of the prequel, original and sequel trilogy, but also points out that , that this idea is controversial. Several insiders instead stated that the trilogy will be a new, independent film series.

A source close to production also denied this to io9, describing the trilogy at a very early stage of development as the start of a new one star Wars Saga, designed to complement the studio's countless other projects.

The potential for this trilogy of films to be a definitive continuation of the Skywalker saga would have been a wild choice – especially as one of the ones that there are now so many star Wars Films currently in development at Lucasfilm are intended to be sequels The Rise of Skywalker already in the form of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley's New Jedi Order film, with the latter reprising her role as Jedi Master Rey Skywalker. It would probably be like that The film (if it ever happens) that picks up the remaining storylines of the sequel trilogy.

Either this new trilogy, if connected to the main saga, could stand alongside standalone films at a similar pace star Wars Continuity, or could potentially push the timeline even further beyond the sequels to give other films room to pick up on their characters. Projects in the works alongside this rumored trilogy include the three previously announced films star Wars Celebration Europe in 2023 – the aforementioned Rey film, James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi film and Dave Filoni's Mandoverse team-up film, which is widely believed to be a adaptation of Timothy Zahn's classic novels Heir to the Empire trilogy – as well as a Lando Calrissian film, previously announced as a TV series, written by Solois Donald Glover alongside his brother Stephen; Taika Waititi's film, which has been a long time in the making; and the only film we actually know of that has had footage shot so far is Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and Groguis scheduled to appear in 2026. But these films also came alongside a number of high-profile announcements of projects that were also ultimately canceled over the past five years, including a Rogue Squadron Film from Patty Jenkins, a film in development from Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige, one from Guillermo Del Toro and more. Lucasfilm is in the midst of planning for an uncertain future star Wars on both the big and small screen following the sudden cancellation of The Acolyte– and the announcement of further films will not convince star Wars Fans, it's actually going to happen soon… and at this point, they probably won't believe it until they sit in the theater.
