Snow days are a thing of the past

As the National Weather Service predicts snow for Thursday – and possibly Wednesday and Friday as well – Albuquerque Public Schools is reminding families that classes are still in session, even in inclement weather.

The district replaced snow days with “asynchronous learning days” in 2023-24, and that policy will continue this school year.

That means APS students are expected to complete classes at home on days when school is closed due to inclement weather, rather than playing in the snow or catching up on soap operas.

According to a district news release, APS employees, with the exception of teachers and paraprofessionals, are expected to report to work as soon as possible. Teachers and teaching assistants can work from home or at their schools on these days.

Asynchronous learning days teachers could see:

  • Create and publish assignments that students can complete independently using Google Classroom or another platform.
  • Keep office hours online to support students with assignments or offer tutoring.
  • Use other teaching practices to ensure students are learning.

According to APS, students who do not have access to digital devices or the internet will be given additional time to complete in-class assignments upon their return.

“During inclement weather, our top priority is to ensure the safety of students and staff,” district spokesman Martin Salazar said. “But right behind safety is ensuring continuity in student learning. This is where asynchronous learning comes into play. It gives students the opportunity to continue their learning at their own pace at home with the support of their teachers.”

He said the process helps students stay on track academically and avoids having to add days to the calendar at the end of the school year.

According to APS, asynchronous learning will not be used if weather causes a delayed start.

More information about weather-related delays can be found here.

Some asynchronous learning days are planned regardless of the weather. These include high school tryout days, parent-teacher conferences, and graduation days.
