David Tennant's acclaimed new series becomes a streaming hit

David Tennant's latest series, Rivalshas left a strong impression on the streaming charts. The series landed in the top 10 shows across all streaming platforms last week.




Rivals is an adaptation of Jilly Cooper's 1988 novel of the same name, following Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-standing rivalry comes to a head. Tennant is a significant departure from his most notable role as the Doctor Doctor WhoThe steamy drama stars as Baddingham, with Alex Hassell alongside him as Campbell-Black. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, Lisa McGrillis, Alex Hassell, Nafessa Williams, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer. The series debuted on Disney+ and Hulu on October 18, and Reelgood recently confirmed the series has cracked the top 10 spot on the weekly Top 10 Shows Right Now list for all streaming platforms from October 24th to 30th.

Rivals faced stiff competition from the mystery comedy-drama series Just murders in the building With Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short at the top of the list. Two comic-inspired series took second and third place with Disney+/Marvel's Agatha all the time and HBO/DC's The penguin respectively. Other shows included in the top 10 Disclaimer, High potential, lioness, The Lincoln Lawyer, Out of And Matlock.


Rivals delves into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986, with the feud between Tennant and Hassell's character taking center stage. Hulu's description of the series teases drama and romance, saying, “Rivals plunges headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986, where hairstyles are big and ambitions are even bigger. Deals are brokered in both boardrooms and bedrooms. Nobody can be sure who is ahead. If every man and woman only exists for themselves, can true love truly blossom?”


Rivals also debuted with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score

Since its debut last month, Rivals has clearly been well received by the audience. David Tennants Rivals has a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating, with an average of 94% from critics and a 90% approval rating from audiences at the time of writing. The first season of the series released all eight episodes on October 18 and fully adapted Jilly Cooper's 1988 novel of the same name, the second of Cooper's novels Rutshire Chronicles Series. The romance novels tell the stories of upper-class British families, often with themes of adultery, scandal and death. Rupert Campbell-Black is one of the series' main recurring characters, with each book being able to be read as a standalone novel.
