Kyle Hendricks is reportedly close to a deal with the Angels

When I discussed Kyle Hendricks' impending departure from the Chicago Cubs and his first move into free agency toward the end of the year, I mentioned that it would be wise to sign Hendricks to a rebuilding team with a young pitching staff, so that he can offer them different layers of value.

But honestly, I had no idea it would happen so quickly:

For Hendricks, who grew up in Southern California, signing with the Angels would be a homecoming. I wonder if that's part of the reason why this deal came together so incredibly quickly.

For the pitching-needy Angels, Hendricks would pitch at the end of a rotation that currently has a number of relative question marks. However, his value could be significant in helping younger pitchers coming up, even if his best days on the mound are behind him. But I don't rule out that he could still be a good 4th/5th option on an average team like the Angels plan to do. I will definitely support it.

I suspect it was immediately clear that the Cubs would never keep Hendricks in a big league deal (no surprise there, and the right decision), so it's good for him that he got a deal elsewhere quickly . The Angels, who have already traded Griffin Canning for Jorge Soler, are the fast players this offseason.

I expect more on this soon.
