Colorado voters support gay marriage rights

Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly supported repealing the Colorado Constitution's now-defunct definition of marriage, which only recognizes unions between a man and a woman.

As of 8:45 p.m., “yes” on Amendment J received 64% of the more than 2.1 million votes cast so far.

The measure would repeal language in the state constitution that limits valid marriages to those between a man and a woman. An amendment approved by voters in 2006 added this definition to the Constitution.

However, the issue has been controversial since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalized same-sex marriage in 2015.

Proponents of this year's change — including the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and Democratic U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet — argued that those unions could be at risk if the U.S. Supreme Court considers overturning previous rulings.
