Hoboken City Council President Jen Giattino has died

Jen Giattino, a popular community leader with a respected independent voice, died suddenly at home after returning from a trip to Japan.

From a Hudson County perspective:

Hoboken Council President Jen Giattino, who was elected to her fourth term on the council last year representing the 6th District, died suddenly this evening at the age of 52, leaving the entire community in utter disbelief.

“I am heartbroken to announce that my beloved wife Jen – the love of my life and mother of our three children – has suddenly passed away. Not only was she an incredible mother, but she was also a dedicated public servant who cared deeply for this community,” her husband, Joe Giattino, said in a statement.

“Jen’s unwavering commitment, kindness and passion have touched so many lives here in Hoboken. We are devastated by her loss and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Hoboken City Council unanimously elected Councilwoman Giattino as Council President for 2024.

She ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Hoboken in 2017.

“My name is Jen Giattino, I have lived in Hoboken since 1998. I am a wife, proud mother of three children and businesswoman. I am serving my second term as Hoboken City Councilwoman for the 6th District and am also serving my third term as City Council President. Today I am pleased to be surrounded by so many supporters as I announce my candidacy for mayor of Hoboken.

“It has been an honor and privilege to work with and for the residents of Hoboken. We all share the success of working together over the last few years for this city that we love and call home. As a team we have achieved a lot. As our mayor, I will continue to promote the many initiatives for our city that were started under Mayor Zimmer and have paved the way for an improved quality of life. However, I believe it is crucial that we also take a fresh look at our current situation and think carefully about where we want to be and how we get to the next level.”

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy released a statement today regarding the death of Hoboken City Council President Giattino:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Jen Giattino. Jen was a true public servant. She dedicated her life to helping the residents of Hoboken and was a leader in her community. She was also a devoted wife and mother. All of Hudson County extends its sincere condolences to Jen’s family.”
