Jake Tapper was visibly stunned on CNN Tuesday night when David Chalian told him that there had been a 20-point swing among independent viewers in Georgia toward Donald Trump.

Chalian reported that early exit poll results in the southern state showed a stark contrast to 2020 results, when Joe Biden won independent voters in the state by nine points.

Tapper responded with raised eyebrows and a moment of silence. “Wow, that’s really significant. Later I added: This independent swing is wild, it is a huge swing.”

He further pointed out that, similar to when the polls closed on the East Coast, Kamala Harris did “slightly better” among young voters, but Trump was ahead among “non-college whites.”

At another point in CNN's coverage, Chalian reported that “protecting democracy” was the “most important issue” among voters across the country, according to the exit poll, with 35% preferring it over abortion or other hot-button issues.

Chalian also pointed out the striking difference between Harris and Trump voters' belief in the integrity of the election.
