Hamilton County Democrats file complaint over late opening of polls

play

The Hamilton County Democratic Party has filed a complaint with its county elections board over an issue that prevented some polling locations from opening on time Tuesday morning.

Not only does state law require polls in every county to open at 6 a.m., but the party also argues that the 15- to 30-minute delay disenfranchised some voters who voted for a variety of reasons, such as voting Had to go to work, had to leave the queue.

According to the complaint, the issue was due to a technical issue and affected at least six locations.

“The Hamilton County Democratic Party wants all voters to have the opportunity to vote consistent with applicable law,” chairwoman Jocelyn Vare wrote in her complaint. “We are submitting this correspondence because voters were initially deprived of voting time, so to speak.”

The party called on the electoral board to remind polling stations that all voters present until 6 p.m. can vote and to investigate the technical glitch that occurred.

“We want to ensure that every registered voter in Indiana has the opportunity to cast their vote fairly and equitably, and that was not the case this morning,” said Dayna Colbert, executive director of the state party.

Elections director Beth Sheller did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There's no shortage of intrigue this Election Day, especially in Hamilton County, which has several contested statehouse districts and some highly politicized school board races.
