Gardner and Mead impress in loss to Binghamton

Second semester SaraJo Gardner and freshmen Daphne Mead won their individual races and took five first-place finishes as Canisius fell to Binghamton in the varsity swimming and diving competition at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats picked up victories over the Golden Griffins in both the men's and women's events, earning a 198-98 win in the men's event and a 198-108 win in the women's event.

For the second straight year, Mead placed first in all three individual events, winning the 200 free (1:56.57), the 100 butterfly (58.66) and the 100 IM (59.89). Mead's times this season rank high compared to other MAAC swimmers, holding top-five times in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the fastest time in the 200 IM (2:07.49).

Second semester Evie Leighton took second place in both women's individual freestyle events with times of 1:57.50 in the 200 freestyle and 55.21 in the 100 freestyle. Leighton holds the second-fastest time in the MAAC in the 200 freestyle (1:55.99).

Gardner took first place in both the 100-meter dash (59.91) and 200-meter dash (2:09.36). The senior followed closely behind her Brenna McLaughlinwho took second place in both the 100 m (1:00.26) and 200 m (2:10.28) backstroke.

For the men in the second year Elliot Somers took first place in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.27) and narrowly missed first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.19, finishing second. senior Sam Vidal Likewise, she took first place in the 100m breaststroke (58.23) and came a close second in the 200m breaststroke (2:08.06).

senior Bronson Benes took first place in the 200-meter butterfly (1:55.66), but was again narrowly edged out of first place in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing second with a time of 51.18.

NEXT
The Griffs travel to Cleveland State every year for the Magnus Invitational. The meet will feature numerous collegiate swimming programs and will take place November 21-23.
