A large group of Muslim Americans split their votes evenly between Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, according to the latest national poll of Muslim Americans released ahead of the upcoming US presidential election on November 5 .

The poll released Friday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) shows that Stein and Harris are statistically tied in the American Muslim vote, with 42 percent now favoring the Green Party candidate and 41 percent supporting the Democratic candidate. The survey has a margin of error of 2.5 percent.

A Cair poll released on August 29 also showed that Stein and Harris were tied in the Muslim-American vote: 29 percent of respondents said they planned to vote for Stein and 28 percent planned to vote for Harris .

According to Friday's poll, Donald Trump is expected to receive around 10 percent of the Muslim-American vote, relatively unchanged from his approval level in August.

The increase in those wanting to support Harris and Stein appears to be driven by the number of previously undecided Muslim-American voters, which stood at 16 percent in August and fell to just 0.8 percent in Friday's poll.

“This final national survey of American Muslim voters confirms that our community members are strongly engaged in the 2024 election. 95 percent said they plan to vote,” Cair said.

“Significant decline in support for key candidates”

The report reveals increasingly visible electoral fault lines within the Muslim-American community: Compared to previous years, more Muslims are choosing not to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate.

A 2020 Cair poll found that 69 percent of Muslims voted for Joe Biden in the last presidential election.

“The significant decline in support for major presidential candidates compared to 2020 and 2016 is almost certainly a result of community concern over the genocide in Gaza,” Cair said.

According to a 2017 Pew study, approximately 3.45 million people in the United States are Muslim, many of whom live in several swing states in the United States. Cair released data in late August showing that there were 2.5 million registered Muslim voters in the country.

Palestine, and therefore Israel's war against Gaza, is this time an issue that is high on the list of priorities for many Muslims, even beyond domestic political concerns.

“We need to start looking like independents who can move in both directions so that both parties seek our approval so that we begin the process of getting the two parties to embrace Muslim Americans,” said Hassan Abdel Salam, one of the leaders of the Abandon Harris movement, Middle East Eye said.

Saad Husain, a 62-year-old from Canton, a city in Wayne County, Michigan, told MEE he was voting for Stein because the Biden administration supports Israel's war on Gaza. He was unimpressed by the Democratic Party's labeling of Trump as “the lesser evil,” saying, “I've had enough.”

However, in the swing state of Michigan, where both candidates are fighting for every vote, Trump is doing better than Harris. In an August Cair poll, Trump had 18 percent of the Muslim vote in Michigan, while Harris trailed with 12 percent.
