Another NFL coach got the goal.

The New Orleans Saints have released Dennis Allen after the team lost their seventh straight game on Sunday.

Allen is the second head coach to be fired this season, just weeks after the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh.

This is the Saints' first midseason firing since the late Tom Benson took over the team in 1985. Allen, who replaced Sean Payton as coach in 2022, coached the team between 18 and 25 years.

Special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi is expected to be the interim coach. There will undoubtedly be a search for a head coach in the offseason.

An obvious potential candidate for the job? Former Patriots coach Bill Belichick is out there, lurking for the next few weeks, waiting for another opportunity to coach. But is the Saints job right for Belichick?

Should the Saints want Belichick?

They will kick the tires. Why shouldn't they? If there's a chance to get Belichick, it's at least due diligence to take a look.

However, like the situation in Atlanta last year, there could be some reluctance from the front office because they don't want to lose control.

Mickey Loomis, who has been with the organization since 2000, has served as assistant general manager/general manager for the past 11 years.

The fee is that Belichick wants to run the operation similar to New England. This means having complete control over football operations and all related decisions. That would lead to a restructuring of the front office that might not be wanted from above.

After the death of her husband Tom Benson in 2018, Gayle Benson took over as principal owner of the Saints. It would be their decision whether Belichick was worth this maneuver. Atlanta's Arthur Blank wasn't willing to go to such lengths to secure Belichick.

Additionally, the Saints are planning a rebuild. Some of their best players are getting older. Defensively, Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan are each 35. Tyrann Mathiew is 32. Offensively, Taysom Hill is 34. Derek Carr is 33.

You may be more inclined to work with a younger trainer.

Currently, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the hottest name for head coaching vacancies.

Would Belichick want the Saints?

The six-time Super Bowl winner with the Patriots appreciates the history of the Saints. Unlike Atlanta, the Saints have won one Super Bowl (2009 season) and are a much more consistent contender – three NFC title games (2006, 2009 and 2018 seasons), seven NFC South titles and nine playoff appearances since 2006, all under the former coach Sean Payton.

But the Saints' roster doesn't quite fit Belichick's coaching career. He doesn't want to be involved in a reconstruction. He would ideally like to join a team that is on the verge of winning it all. These are not the saints.

He wants an established quarterback or one he can win with. Carr does not meet these criteria.

The way things are going, there could be other, more attractive spots down the road that would be a better fit for Belichick, be it Philadelphia, Jacksonville or Dallas. He is also closely involved with ownership at all three locations. These are the best chances for Belichick's future employment.
