Rams 26-20 Seahawks (November 3, 2024) Game Recap

SEATTLE – Demarcus Robinson had the undisputed highlight for the Rams on Sunday. a one-handed touchdown reception for 39 yards in overtime, Los Angeles gave Los Angeles a 26-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

But Matthew Stafford, who threw the nice, deep ball that Robinson had with cornerback Riq Woolen overhead, said the play happened a few minutes earlier – on defense.

The Seahawks drove to the Rams' 16 on the first possession of overtime and went for it on fourth-and-1 instead of attempting a field goal. Bobby Brown III and Omar Speights stopped Kenneth Walker III to no avail, setting up Stafford and the Rams' offense.

“If we don’t get the ball right there, we don’t have a chance,” Stafford said. “The defense did a great job getting the ball back for us.”

Although the Rams only needed a field goal, Stafford went for the win by throwing to Robinson, who grabbed the ball in the end zone with his free hand and secured it as it fell to the turf. Robinson hit the ball and was mobbed by his teammates.

Stafford threw for 298 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for the Rams (4-4), who have won three straight after losing four of their last five. Robinson finished the game with six catches for 94 yards and both scores.

Geno Smith rushed for 363 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions for the Seahawks (4-5), who have lost four straight at home and five of six overall to fall to last place in the crowded NFC West. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had seven catches for a career-best 180 yards and two scores.

The Seahawks have a much-needed bye week to figure out what went wrong.

“We have the right people, we just need to make it come to life,” Seattle first-year coach Mike Macdonald said. “But there’s a wall outside and we have to go.”

The Rams rallied from a 13-3 deficit to take a 20-13 lead on Kamren Kinchens' 103-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter, only to have the Seahawks tie it when Smith Smith-Njigba for a 14-yard touchdown touchdown with 51 seconds left.

Stafford tried to put the Rams in position for a game-tying field goal, but the shot failed just short of midfield and Los Angeles punted to start overtime.

“What a unique, strange game this was,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “What a task for our group to achieve victory.”

Kinchens had two of Smith's three interceptions by the Rams, both in the red zone in the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal from the 6, Smith came under pressure and threw an ill-advised throw straight to Kinchens. who made it out of the end zone and remained untouched as he ran across the field. It was the longest pick-6 in franchise history.

A blocked put put Seattle deep into Los Angeles territory again, but Smith again came under pressure and Kinchens deflected his short pass on second-and-goal from the 4.

Robinson came up big as a receiver for the Rams Puka Nacua was ejected in the second quarter for throwing a punch at Seahawks linebacker Tyrel Dodson after an interception by Woolen. After the game, Nacua called it a learning experience.

“Obviously he doesn’t want to do that, he doesn’t want to be out there playing with us,” Stafford said. “Sometimes the emotions get the best of us, but I have full confidence in his ability to respond and understand that these are things we cannot do.”

The Seahawks, meanwhile, were without top receiver DK Metcalf because of a right knee sprain, and Smith-Njigba filled the void.

The game started quietly, with the teams combining and hitting eight times before the second quarter was half over.

The Rams got their first pick when Smith's first-quarter pass intended for Smith-Njigba bounced off his hands and into the arms of Jaylen McCollough, who leads all NFL rookies with four interceptions this season. He is the first Rams rookie with at least four interceptions since Janoris Jenkins in 2012.

Smith hit Tyler Lockett for a 30-yard touchdown for a 6-3 lead and Jason Myers missed the extra point. With five seconds left in the first half, Smith-Njigba caught a 24-yard scoring pass to give it a 13-3 lead.

On LA's first possession of the second half, Stafford found Robinson from 1 yard out to bring the Rams within 13-10.

“What an up and down, right?” Stafford said. “Our defense loses the ball. We got down there and we didn't score from the 1, we had a punt blocked. It was everywhere. It took a lot of mental strength, power and belief to win that.”
