The Texas Secretary of State and the U.S. Department of Justice discuss opposing sides ahead of Election Day

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – With just a few days left until Election Day, Texas and the US Department of Justice are arguing over who can and cannot legally be at a polling station.

Bexar County reported record-breaking numbers with more than 570,000 early votes cast. However, as Election Day approaches, the Texas Secretary of State's office is taking a stand on the opposing side of the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Justice released a letter on November 1 that sparked controversy in Texas. The letter said the department plans to “monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in 86 jurisdictions in 27 states for the November 5 general election.”

Federal poll watchers, also known as poll watchers, were to be deployed to eight counties in Texas, including Bexar County and Atascosa County.

KSAT reached out to the Texas Secretary of State, and the office sent back this statement:

According to the Texas Secretary of State's Office, federal election observers were not permitted in Texas for either the 2020 or 2016 presidential elections.

It is not yet clear whether the state or the federal government will prevail here.
