Nick Sirianni got away with aggressive decisions that failed. Mike McCarthy and Sean Payton had no such luck.

When the calls don't work, it's easy to have doubts.

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-23 on Sunday thanks to a twisted interception in the end zone by linebacker Nakobe Dean.

If not, Sirianni would regret missing out on nine points. The Eagles took an 0-2 lead on fourth down and opted to extend drives rather than attempt two field goals within 45 yards. They also failed three times on 2-point conversion attempts, including twice when Jalen Hurts was stopped on the tush push.

“We’ve had pretty good results with that in the past. You always think about everything. You think about who you have. You think about your previous experiences with it. You always look at the analysis,” Sirianni explained. “Right now I'm always doing what I think is best for the football team. It didn't work today. That's how it works. This is the hat I have to wear. If we get a fourth down and convert a fourth down, nothing is actually said. I understand that there will be questions if we don't do this.

“Again, I have to have the courage to really do that at the end of the day and say, 'Am I doing everything I can do to help us win the game?' In those moments I thought it was me, but I'll go back and watch it again. I will always be hypercritical of myself. If it doesn’t work, I’ll definitely think about it more.”

The Eagles blew a 22-0 lead and were on the verge of defeat when the Jaguars had a first down on their 13th with 1:42 to play. But Trevor Lawrence threw a poor pass intended for D'Ernest Johnson and Dean made a diving attempt to seal a fourth straight win for Philadelphia (6-2).

That's not enough to silence the critics. Sirianni's questionable decisions dominated the conversation after a game that featured Saquon Barkley's reverse hurdle throw over a defender and DeVonta Smith's incredible one-handed touchdown catch.

The Cowboys couldn't overcome McCarthy's aggressive decisions, which backfired 27:21 defeat in Atlanta.

They trailed the Falcons 7-3 in the second quarter when McCarthy scored fourth-and-1 at Atlanta's 44-yard line. CeeDee Lamb was thrown on a jet sweep for a 3-yard loss and the Falcons took advantage of field position.

Kirk Cousins ​​​​threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Darnell Mooney on fourth-and-3 for a 14-3 lead.

It was 14-10 when McCarthy made an odd call for a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from the Cowboys 38. Punter Bryan Anger's pass fell short when CJ Godwin slipped and the Falcons turned the short field into another TD drive.

“We cause too many self-inflicted wounds,” McCarthy said.

Dallas (3-5) has lost three straight games heading into its next game against Philadelphia. And Dak Prescott's status is uncertain as he was forced to miss the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury.

The Broncos knew they had to score a lot of points to keep up with the high-powered Ravens, so Payton was aggressive from the start.

On Denver's second possession, Javonte Williams was stopped on fourth-and-1 from the Ravens' 44 without gaining a lead. Baltimore took the lead and scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

Payton missed a 51-yard field goal attempt on the next possession and attempted it on fourth-and-4 from the Ravens' 33. Bo Nix's deep pass was incomplete and Baltimore eventually kicked a field goal on the ensuing drive.

Denver finished 1-for-5 in its 41-10 loss to the fourth-place Ravens.

“I think there are some games where tastes have to change,” Payton said of the decision to be aggressive. “Obviously we felt like this was one of those games that can vary depending on the opponent.”

The reward is not always greater than the risk.
