Everything you should know about the 2024 presidential election

The 2024 presidential election – one of the most crucial races in history – is just a week away. According to the polls, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are in a close race, and while you may be stressed about the outcome, you can at least rest easy knowing your vote will be properly cast come Election Day on November 5th imminent. In the meantime, you can also find out where each nominee stands on issues like reproductive rights, climate change, student loans and more here.)

By now you've probably already updated your voter registration. If not, you can view the deadlines and final dates for requesting an absentee ballot by state here. Additionally, early voting has already begun in most states. So if you're hoping to cast your vote early, click this link to double-check the deadlines.

In advance, we explained exactly how you can vote on election day, how to find your polling station and much more.

You can confirm your polling location online or by phone.

There are several ways to certify your voting location, regardless of where you live in the United States.

If you want to find it online, you can contact the National Association of Secretaries of State. There you will be automatically redirected to your state's election board website, where you can check your voter registration and find your exact polling location.

In some cases, you may be able to view a sample ballot so you know exactly what to expect on Election Day.

Otherwise, if you would like to confirm your polling location by phone, you can find the contact information for your state and local elections office on USAGov's website. This will provide you with a contact number to call the office and check your polling location.

You cannot vote anywhere other than your assigned polling station.

On Election Day, you cannot use a polling place other than the one assigned to you by your state or local elections office. If you go to the wrong polling place, you may be asked to cast a provisional ballot, which may not be included in the final vote. If you do end up casting a provisional vote, be sure to get information from the poll worker about how to follow up on your vote and see if it was counted.

If you've recently moved, you'll need to update your current address on your voter registration, but in most cases the window to do so is closed for the 2024 presidential election.

Election day is November 5, 2024.

The 2024 presidential election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th.

While most states open their polls at 7:00 a.m. local time, this varies from state to state. You can check the opening times of your polling place here.

As long as you are in line before the polls close, you can keep your seat and cast your vote. It is illegal to prevent you from voting, and if you ever run into problems (and you have confirmed your voter registration and polling location), you can always call the Election Protection Hotline at (866) 687-8683.

Early voting has already begun.

Not all states offer early voting, but in the states that do, early voting for the 2024 presidential election has largely already begun.

To find out if your state offers early voting, you can check out this table from the US Vote Foundation, which lists early voting options in each state and the dates you can vote. The table also breaks down which states offer early in-person absentee voting. (In most cases, states only offer one or the other.)
