USC Trojans' Lincoln Riley on losing Miller Moss Washington: “A few loose decisions.”

The USC Trojans took on the Washington Huskies on Saturday in a rainy Husky Stadium. It was a night to forget for quarterback Miller Moss.

Moss went 30 for 50 with 293 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. This is the third time this season that Miller Moss has thrown the ball 50 times or more. Former USC Trojans superstar and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams only accomplished that once in his three seasons with Lincoln Riley as coach.

The USC Trojans lost 26-21 to the Washington Huskies. USC got off to a rough start and quickly found itself behind 10-0. They went into halftime trailing 20-7.

The Trojans rallied and took a 21-20 lead with touchdown passes from Miller Moss to Makai Lemon and Kyle Ford. Like clockwork, USC got a late lead and immediately gave it away. Washington took the lead right back with a 10-play, 65-yard drive.

The Trojans, like in all of their previous losses, had a chance to regain the lead but failed.

Trailing 26-21, USC had two attempts to take the lead. Everyone stopped in the red zone. Washington missed the final seconds and sent the Trojans back to Los Angeles with a score of 4-5.

The 2024 season was a nightmare for USC. They fall to 2-5 in Big Ten play, 0-4 on the road and 4-5 overall. The Trojans' defense wasn't the problem like it was last season, so much of the blame was placed on the offense. The leaders of this crime? Coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Miller Moss.

After the loss, Miller Moss did not appear at the Trojans' postgame press conference. Coach Lincoln Riley was asked what he thought of Moss' performance in the loss.

“Honestly, I thought he played pretty well in the first half,” Riley said. “I thought he made some loose decisions in the second half. The third down was obviously a big blow that hurt us. . . . I thought he played well.”

Moss made a few unforgivable mistakes and Riley highlighted his interception in the second half.

“The quarterback position is defined by making big plays, and he made a lot of them,” Riley said. “I thought he gave our guys a chance to make a few more plays that we needed to make.”

Riley has constantly defended Miller Moss from backlash this season. He hasn't lost confidence in his quarterback and believes he's the right man for the job for the rest of the season. Riley admitted they couldn't consistently turn the ball over, which has been an issue for Moss this season.

“Obviously we can’t turn the ball over,” Riley said.

Moss' three interceptions against Washington bring his total to nine interceptions this season. While he shouldn't be blamed, he had a narrow escape when he shot the ball into the arms of a Washington lineman, who dropped it.

There will certainly be a lot of questions for Riley this week as to whether he will stick with Moss or leave things to sophomore quarterback Jayden Maiava.
