Kari Lake closes gap in New Arizona Senate poll

Republican Kari Lake is closing in on Democrat Ruben Gallego in the race for U.S. Senate in Arizona, according to the results of a poll released just days before Election Day.

The one on Friday from YouGov/The times of London/SAY24 finds Lake trailing Gallego by 5 percentage points. A majority of 49 percent of registered voters in Arizona said they supported Gallego, while 44 percent chose Lake. The survey was conducted Oct. 25-31 and has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Lake fared significantly worse in a YouGov/CBS News poll released Oct. 18, with the Republican candidate trailing the Democrat by nine points among likely voters — 54 percent of respondents said they would vote for Gallego and 45 percent preferred Lake. The poll was conducted Oct. 11-16 and has a margin of error of 3.3 percent.

Gallego, who represents Arizona's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, is still ahead of Lake in most polls. However, the congressman's lead narrowed in the final weeks of the contest, and some recent polls suggest the race is effectively tied.

An AtlasIntel poll conducted Oct. 30 and 31 and released Friday showed Lake with a tiny 1-point lead among likely voters. However, the poll was one of only three public polls that showed the Republican had an advantage throughout the election cycle, and only by one point each.

By comparison, Gallego has a double-digit lead over Lake in 15 different polls. A RABA Research poll released Monday and conducted Oct. 25-27 showed the Democratic congressman with a massive 15-point lead among registered voters in Arizona.

Newsweek I emailed Friday evening seeking comment on the Lake and Gallego campaigns.

A spokesman for the Lake campaign previously said Newsweek that “the momentum is” for Lake and former President Donald Trump heading into the Nov. 5 election, with the campaign expressing confidence “that Arizonans will deliver a win for both Trump and Lake.”

Lake is well behind Trump in polls, although she often emphasizes her ties to the former president. In Friday's YouGov contest, Trump led Vice President Kamala Harris by just one point in Arizona, 48 percent to 47 percent. The times of London/SAY24 survey.

After narrowly losing Arizona's 2022 gubernatorial election to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, Lake repeated Trump's denial of the post-2020 election, claiming without evidence that the contest was “stolen” while launching a series of failed lawsuits, to cancel the result.

Lake continued to refuse to admit she lost to Hobbs during an interview with CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Monday, criticizing Collins for “looking backwards” after being asked at least seven times about the reality of her would accept defeat.
