Rain showers swept through metro Phoenix Saturday evening as a storm moved across the state with the potential to last into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain began to fall in West Valley cities such as Buckeye, Avondale and Goodyear around 5:45 p.m., the weather service's Phoenix office reported.

According to meteorologist Gabriel Lojero, the storm was expected to bring less than an inch of rain to the Phoenix area and move northwestward through the night.

As of 6 p.m., the weather service said the rain was expected to continue in the West Valley and expand into central Phoenix, with brief bursts of rain and thunder accompanying the windy conditions.

The storm brought colder temperatures to 73 degrees before hitting an overnight low of 56 degrees on Saturday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reminded motorists to take extra precautions when hitting the road in rain and recommended drivers allow extra braking space and travel time.

Rain could return Sunday as another weather system moves through the state, bringing a 20% chance of showers in the morning, rising to 50% by the evening, according to the weather service.

The high for Sunday was forecast at 71 degrees, with a low of 50 degrees as the storm system exits the valley.
