OpenAI's Sam Altman says the new AI model takes a while and is difficult to deliver

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Thursday that his company's next major AI model release likely won't come this year because the company is “prioritizing” shipping existing models that focus on reasoning and hard questions.

“All of these models have become quite complex and we can't deliver as many things in parallel as we'd like,” Altman wrote during a Reddit AMA. He said the company faces “limitations and difficult decisions” when it comes to allocating computing resources “for a lot of great ideas.”

A Reddit The user asked Altman about the release date of GPT-5 or an equivalent. GPT is the company's family of large language models. OpenAI released GPT-4 in March 2023.

Altman responded that OpenAI has “some very good releases coming later this year,” but “nothing that we will call GPT-5.”

The pressure is on OpenAI to continue providing faster and more efficient updates than its competitors, the Internet giant Google to well-funded start-ups like Anthropic strengthening their artificial intelligence models. OpenAI closed its latest funding round earlier this month at a valuation of $157 billion. The company expects losses of about $5 billion this year on revenue of $3.7 billion, CNBC confirmed in September.

Reddit users asked OpenAI executives about release dates for other new models and features, including Sora, the video generation model, as well as a new version of the image generation model DALL-E, “camera mode” for ChatGPT, and vision capabilities for Advanced Voice Mode (AVM). ChatGPT.

After a questioner asked whether Sora was delayed “due to computational effort/time required to reach the conclusion or for security reasons,” OpenAI product chief Kevin Weil wrote: “The model needs to be perfected, security/impersonation/other things must be guaranteed.” Correct, and the calculation must be scaled!”

Regarding the next version of DALL-E, Altman wrote that “the next update will be worth the wait” but that there is no “release plan” yet. He added that there is currently no planned release date for AVM Vision either. OpenAI technical vice president Srinivas Narayanan wrote that there is no “exact release date” planned for ChatGPT’s camera mode either.

Early Thursday, OpenAI launched a search feature in the ChatGPT chatbot, enabling it to better compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing and Perplexity.

ChatGPT Search offers up-to-date sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather and more, powered by real-time web search and partnerships with news and data providers, according to the company. In July, the company began beta testing its prototype search engine called SearchGPT.

Since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, Alphabet investors have worried that OpenAI could take search market share from Google by giving consumers new ways to search for information online. The move also positions OpenAI as more of a competitor to Microsoft, which has invested nearly $14 billion in OpenAI.

Replying to a user's question about whether ChatGPT Search uses Bing as a search engine behind the scenes, Narayanan wrote: “We use a number of services and Bing is an important service.”

Another topic that came up in the Reddit discussion was OpenAI's recent controversies over its impending transition to a for-profit structure, as well as a number of high-profile executive departures.

“While we are sad that some of the people we worked closely with are no longer here, we have an incredibly talented team and many new great people who have also recently joined us,” Narayanan wrote in response to one Ask. “And we continue to ship what’s really important.”

For Altman, Reddit is not just a communication platform. He is a former board member and one of the company's biggest investors, whose stake swelled to nearly $1.5 billion after Reddit's better-than-expected earnings led to a 42% jump in its stock price on Wednesday and a 42% jump on Thursday led to a further increase of 3.2%.
