OKC Thunder pulls away from the Clippers in the fourth quarter and wins 105-92

Last night in Portland, the Oklahoma City Thunder became the first team in NBA history to win their first five regular season games by 12 or more points.

They are now the only team to win their first six games by 12 or more points, defeating the LA Clippers 105-92 in their first official game at the Intuit Dome. Oklahoma City only allowed 35 points after halftime and won the fourth quarter 24-14.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 25 points on 7 of 14 shooting and made all nine of his free throw attempts. He also recorded nine assists, three rebounds and one block.

Luguentz Dort scored 16 points on 12 shots, along with four rebounds and three assists.

Chet Holmgren recorded his third double-double of the season, collecting 10 points, 14 rebounds and four assists.

Isaiah Joe fueled the Thunder's run in the fourth quarter, making four 3-pointers on eight attempts and finishing the game with a game-high +21 plus-minus.

As usual, Oklahoma City's starting lineup included Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Dort, with Aaron Wiggins joining those four for the second time this season.

The Clippers' starting lineup — James Harden, Norman Powell, Terance Mann, Derrick Jones Jr. and Ivica Zubac — remained unchanged from the first five games.

Harden, who played the entire first quarter, stuffed the box score with six points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in the frame, despite shooting 2 of 8 overall and 2 of 7 from downtown.

LA held the Thunder to 7-for-21 shooting in the first frame, with Williams and Dort combining to go 2-for-11. No Thunder player managed an offensive rebound in those 12 minutes, a big reason they scored just 19 points and trailed by nine.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored the first eight Oklahoma City points of the second quarter, including a 3-pointer from the left wing and a 1-1 floater, but the Clippers maintained their lead through active defense and capitalized on their possessions early in the game Quarter optimally. Bench guard Kris Dunn scored six points and took the ball away from Holmgren early in the quarter, prompting a timeout for Mark Daigneault.

Joe hit two transition wing triples off the Clippers' turnovers about 75 seconds apart, bringing the Thunder within seven points. LA guard Kevin Porter Jr. responded immediately with a four-point play over the outstretched Wiggins.

Midway through the second quarter, Oklahoma City went on a 15-0 run that lasted about two and a half minutes and took them from a 12-point deficit to a three-point lead.

Powell, who began the evening averaging 25.4 points per game and shooting 62.0%, countered with a personal 8-0 run. His transition 3-pointer with 1:32 left in the first half triggered another timeout by Daigneault.

At halftime the Clippers led 57-53. They shot 20-for-39 overall (51.3%) and 9-for-21 from downtown (42.9%), but struggled at the finish line (8-for-14, 57.1%). Oklahoma City had five fewer turnovers and had seven steals in the first half, helping to make up for a complete lack of offensive rebounds. Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams and Joe all shot 2-for-3 three-pointers in the first half.

Dort made a wide-open 3-pointer after an offensive board by Joe and a drive-and-kick by Gilgeous-Alexander, prompting Clippers coach Tyronn Lue to call a timeout 35 seconds into the second half. Two minutes later, Lue successfully parried a Harden flick against Gilgeous-Alexander, although Holmgren still fired a catch-and-shoot jump shot from mid-range on the ensuing possession.

A side-step triple by Cason Wallace in the right corner, a block by Holmgren and a layup by Gilgeous-Alexander gave the Thunder their first lead of the second half with 4:44 left in the third quarter. Both teams traded blows in the remaining time, with Powell increasing his output to 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting until Wiggins hit an open three-pointer with 18 seconds left. Oklahoma City had an 81-78 lead after three quarters.

The Thunder return home to play the Orlando Magic this Monday, November 4th at 8:15 PM CST.
