Campbell and Kahuku win the OIA Open football championship game

MILILANI, Hawaii – A lengthy four-team slugfest at John Kauinana Stadium lasted into early Saturday morning and ultimately ended with top-ranked Campbell and three-time defending champion Kahuku advancing to next week's Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division championship game.

They meet in Farrington on Friday at 7 p.m. Both teams secured a spot in the HHSAA Open Division with their victories. The undefeated Sabers and dynastic Red Raiders got there in very different ways.

Campbell, perhaps rattled by a change in Kapolei's offensive stance, fell behind by 26 points in the second quarter and spent the rest of the shootout recovering. The Sabers ultimately defeated the Hurricanes 49-43 on Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele's sixth touchdown pass of the night to Shaison Kupukaa, a 13-yarder over the middle with 2 minutes, 8 seconds left to play.

Kapolei decided to move his own dynamic quarterback, Tama Amisone, all over the field while handing most of the passing responsibility to Leysen Rodrigues, a sophomore. It worked for a while as the Hurricanes built a stunning 33-7 lead.

But Sagapolutele was too composed and too efficient as he surpassed 10,000 career passing yards and passed Mililani alumnus and current Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel for the Hawaii high school record. Sagapolutele was 32 of 47 for 473 yards and one interception.

Campbell got within 36-14 at halftime and kept going from there, outscoring Kapolei 35-7 in the second half. Sagapolutele, a Cal commit, provided a key 2-yard rushing score on fourth-and-goal in the third quarter.

Amisone was sidelined with ice on his hip and was unavailable for Kapolei's final possession of the final two minutes. The Hurricanes looked nervous and couldn't move the ball.

The nightcap, however, was a one-sided affair. Kahuku, who looked confident in all three phases at the right time of year, spoiled Mililani quarterback Kini McMillan's return from injury with a 35-6 win over the home team and reigning OIA champions.

Two-way standout Aiden Manutai opened the game for Kahuku in the second quarter with a 34-yard touchdown catch from recently imported quarterback Matai Fuiava, followed by his 34-yard pick-six from McMillan with 19 seconds left End of half time. Kahuku only required 176 yards of total offense due to his effective play on defense and special teams.

Mililani also had a weapon fresh from the continent: receiver Brandon Gaea, a University of Hawaii player who caught three balls for 23 yards.

Kapolei and Mililani will meet next weekend in the OIA third-place game for the league's final state spot.
