Rece Davis suspects Mike Elko's “politician” comments were directed at Texas' Steve Sarkisian

Rece Davis speculated on some of Mike Elko's post-game comments from the weekend during the latest episode of the College GameDay podcast.

Elko had some pretty pointed comments after Texas A&M's comeback win. Here's what he had to say:

“This is a real program,” Elko said. “It’s not fake. It's not a politician running this program who talks fast and insults everyone. This is a real program. And for all the recruits out there, this is a real place. And if you want to be really good at football, this is the right place for you.”

On Monday, Elko tried to clear the air about his comments as some thought he was attacking former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher. Elko maintained his comments were not directed at any specific coach — and certainly not at Fisher, who once hired him as A&M's defensive coordinator.

However, that didn't stop Davis from guessing who Elko might have been talking about at that moment at the podium. Davis speculated that he may have wanted to take a dig at Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

“The low-key target could have been Steve Sarkisian because now you’re back in the conference with Texas,” Davis said. “You always fight Texas. And I don't know if Sark fits into what he said. But in all the 100 years we've been talking about A&M football, everything has been focused on Texas in some way, shape or fashion. Texas A&M left the Big 12 and moved to the SEC because of Texas. They didn't want Texas to be there because they don't like Texas. So that’s also a possibility.”

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Elko made those comments to get the attention of a trio of 4-star prospects in the class of 2026. All three players mentioned by Thamel – Jordan Carter, Aaron Gregory and Samu Moala – ultimately committed to Texas A&M earlier this week.

After the big win over LSU and a significant week on the recruiting trail, the Aggies will now turn their attention to the South Carolina game this weekend as they hope to remain undefeated in SEC play.
