What Caitlin Clark said about Fever coach Stephanie White

play

One of the first opponents to officially welcome Caitlin Clark to the WNBA was Stephanie White.

Before Clark's rookie debut, when her Indiana Fever took on White's Connecticut Sun in the opening game of the regular season, Clark first greeted the former Purdue and Fever star.

White, who has been linked to the vacant Fever head coaching position, had nothing but praise for Clark and even implored people to “relax” about the former Iowa star.

When news broke Sunday that the Fever had fired Christie Sides, White's name immediately jumped to the top of the list of potential candidates. And it makes a lot of sense. Indiana Miss Basketball. National champion at Purdue. Former Fever player and coach. And on Monday, White and The Sun agreed to part ways, opening the door even further to a possible homecoming.

Before the May 14 opener, Clark was asked about White, who also works as an ESPN analyst and has covered numerous Hawkeyes games.

“She obviously picked up on a lot of my games throughout college and I think she has a really great basketball mind,” Clark said. “I think she did a great job hosting the college games. It was great to see them at NBA games. I think what she did is just, honestly, she was obviously a trailblazer. I think she's someone who supports my game.” And she was fun to talk to at shootarounds throughout my college career and she was always very supportive.

“Yeah, well I think the biggest thing is that it's fun to play against her here for the first time after she dictated a lot of my games. Now I get to play against them, so that will be a lot of fun for both of us.”

Maybe soon it won't be against each other anymore.
