Spurs' Wembanyama hits rare stat mark in 106-88 win over Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY – San Antonio center Victor Wembanyama had to settle for a career-low 6 points on Wednesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

If the Utah Jazz had any hopes that this slump would continue into Thursday's game against the Spurs at the Delta Center, they were in vain.

The French phenom was aggressive on offense, hitting five 3-point attempts in the first four minutes. He finished his career with 13 attempts, posting a monster stat line of 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks in a 106-88 win for the Spurs.

Utah led 53-47 at halftime thanks to a balanced performance between Keyonte George, Collin Sexton and rookie Kyle Filipowski in his first NBA start. Former Spurs player Patty Mills even got into a frenzy in the first quarter with three three-pointers in quick succession, but the hot start was short-lived.

The Jazz were careless with the ball and an abysmal 26 turnovers in the game led to Utah suffering its fifth straight loss to start the season.

San Antonio scored 35 points on those giveaways and outscored Utah 30-14 in the third quarter to nearly escape with the game as press attention turned to the burgeoning possibility that Wembanyama's rare 5×5 stat line (at least five out of five points) achieved box score stats) late in the game.

A fifth steal earned him the honor with 1:29 left in the game. It's the second 5×5 of the 20-year-old's young career, as he becomes only the third player in NBA history to achieve that statistic multiple times (Hakeem Olajuwon with six and Andrei Kirilenko with three).

Next, Utah embarks on a four-game trip, starting with the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
