Despite its repugnance, Friday the 13th remains a pillar of the horror film genre. In contrast to Wes Craven with “Elm Street” and John Carpenter with “Halloween”, no popular filmmakers leave their mark here. Still, the 1980s saw annual releases establish Jason Voorhees as one of cinema's scariest killers, but thanks to a whole series of battles over who actually had the right to make more Friday the 13th movies, we didn't have a new one Movie in the history of the series since the very (commercially) successful reboot in 2009. That's a shame, but the franchise is still one of our favorites that we revisit every spooky season because there's just something about this guy and his hockey mask – and fortunately, there is a prequel TV series in the works that will hopefully exist one day.

There are a total of 12 films in the Friday the 13th series. The first eight of these appeared almost annually from 1980 to 1989, followed by more sporadic releases: Jason Goes to Hell in 1993, Jason directed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake – a louder and more painful version of Friday the 13th that attempted to to take history more seriously than ever before. And now we're still waiting for a sequel that we know will never come, although we're still keeping our fingers crossed for Jason's return.

But that's okay, because we have enough Friday the 13th movies to keep us pretty busy.
