Warm Halloween will be a record breaker in the New Jersey region

Mother Nature tricked us into thinking it was spring by bringing temperatures over 30 degrees on Halloween. And it became a record breaker in at least one area of New Jersey.

According to the New York regional office of the National Weather Service, the mercury inched up to 83 degrees Thursday afternoon at Newark Liberty International Airport, breaking the region's all-time Halloween high.

The old Newark record was set 78 years ago, in 1946, when the high temperature reached 82 degrees on October 31st.

On Thursday, Trenton Mercer Airport in Ewing and New York's Central Park became warm enough to reach record highs for Halloween. Each of these locations reached 81 degrees as of 3:15 p.m. this afternoon, matching record highs set in 1946.

These values are about 20 degrees warmer than usual for October 31st.

Mother Nature's special Halloween treat comes from a dome of high pressure circulating off the Mid-Atlantic Coast, allowing warm air from the south and west to flow over our region.

However, the very warm autumn air will not last too long.

The National Weather Service office in New Jersey says a cold front will cross our region on Friday, “which will herald a return of near-normal temperatures by the weekend.”

Hot Halloween temperatures

Newark wasn't the only warm place in New Jersey on Halloween afternoon. These were among the hottest readings reported by the Rutgers NJ Weather Network as of 4 p.m. Thursday:
