Braves leave World Series hero and salary to Angels

The Atlanta Braves acquired Jorge Soler from the San Francisco Giants at the MLB trade deadline last season in hopes of making the playoffs. Even though that postseason push failed to materialize – as the Braves lost to the San Diego Padres in the NL Wild Card round – Soler performed admirably and gave Atlanta's lineup some power.

Soler has a long history with the Braves. He played a crucial role in the Braves' 2021 World Series run. However, 2021 was a long time ago at that point and Soler still had $32 million left on his contract as of this writing.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Alex Anthopoulos began his offseason by sending Soler elsewhere. This freed up some pocket money for the Braves. Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report the deal.

It is particularly difficult to identify winners and losers in a trade, especially when the deal involves prospects. Here's what Atlanta received in return, courtesy of ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Griffin Canning is a 28-year-old starting pitcher. Canning had a 6-13 record with a 5.19 ERA last season. On the surface, this may not seem like a positive development for the Braves, but Anthopoulos certainly has other plans to fill the rotation with viable starters. Max Fried is expected to hit free agency, so perhaps the Braves add as much depth to the position as possible in case Fried doesn't return or his plausible successors don't sign after all.

The only positive thing about Canning is that he is one of the best fielders in his position. Given the number of ground balls he forces, Canning's previous Gold Glove award, which he won in 2020, could come in handy.

We will learn more about this trade shortly.
