When it was announced that Matthew Perry had died suddenly at the age of 54 in October 2023, the news immediately sparked immense sadness and love from fans around the world.

And in a new interview with People, Matthew's stepfather Keith Morrison reflected on how much the star's tragic death rocked the celebrity world as he revealed that Matthew “really didn't know” how much he was loved when he was still alive.

Keith added that Matthew had so little to do with the way fans thought of him that he was in disbelief when people treated him kindly while promoting his bestselling 2022 memoir. Friends, lovers and the big, terrible thing.

Dateline Correspondent Keith also reiterated Matthew's “dying wish” to be “remembered for helping other people, not just for his fame.” Friends“Finally: “It has now become our life’s work to continue this wish.”

Matthew's family founded the Matthew Perry Foundation after his death to help people struggling with addiction.
