Teen with AK-47 found near Colorado Springs High School

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs police found a man with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder near Palmer High School on Wednesday.

Police said they received an original report of a black 18-year-old male carrying an AK-47 near the intersection of East Boulder Street and North Wahsatch Avenue.

The teen was directly across from the Palmer High School gym, and police say about 50 to 100 students were outside in public during their lunch break.

When police contacted the suspect, they said he was not on school property but confirmed he had an AK-47 slung over his shoulder and a high-capacity magazine, which police say is illegal to possess in Colorado.

Police said he handled the weapon in a non-threatening manner and they did not believe he posed a danger to the school or the public at the time.

The teen was not arrested, but police said they seized his magazine and gun during the ongoing investigation.

“The suspect was significantly different in appearance from the suspect a week ago who was seen in the same area; this suspect was likely carrying a scooter that has been easily misidentified as an assault rifle in the past,” Colorado Springs police said.
