How signing Juan Soto could impact the Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are trying to figure out how to overcome the crisis and win a World Series championship.

After picking up two road wins in the 2022 Fall Classic, they have gotten further and further away each season, with a shocking exit in the NLCS last year and a disappointing loss to the New York Mets this season.

Fans have dreamed of the Phillies reuniting superstar Juan Soto with Bryce Harper and Trea Turner, and based on a report from a prominent baseball insider, it appears the front office and ownership group are actually considering the idea.

While this would certainly make major waves throughout Major League Baseball, there are still things that President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski needs to consider before deciding to make this a reality.

Here's how things could affect Philadelphia in the future.

First, the defensive position for Soto would have to be sorted out, with Nick Castellanos manning right field, where he would likely stay if the Phillies were able to sign the phenom.

The good news is that Soto has experience in left field, having played 460 games there, compared to the 446 he played in right field. During his time with the San Diego Padres, he was primarily used in left field, which was consistent with his usage when he was part of the Washington Nationals. In fact, this season was the most games he played in right field in his career with the New York Yankees.

This means there would be no learning curve for him if he were added.

This would also create a platoon for Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas in center field, allowing Philadelphia to use the left-handed hitter in favorable matchups while also giving Rojas a little more time to develop at the plate, which he desperately needs.

This is where things could get interesting.

Manager Rob Thomson has loved using Kyle Schwarber up front, and while that likely won't change, the addition of Soto could have a big impact on the rest of the lineup.

Taking second to Schwarber leaves Bryce Harper at third while two machines end up on base in front of him. If the Phillies stick with Alec Bohm, he could be in the clean spot, where he posted 97 RBI for his second straight year. Again, Castellanos could be an option, with Trea Turner stepping in to give this lineup more power and impact in the middle of the lineup that has clearly been missing.

That would leave JT Realmuto, Bryson Stott and either Marsh or Rojas filling the final three spots, creating a back end of the order that can produce on its own.

The possibilities that would arise from the addition of Soto are frightening for any opposing pitcher.

Dombrowski has to weigh that up.

If Philadelphia can sign Soto, signing him is a no-brainer, but that also brings with it some other decisions they have to make when putting together a 26-man roster.

First, there are nine arbitrable players. Austin Hays, who they acquired at the deadline, is the obvious non-tender candidate since there wouldn't be a clear spot for him if the Phillies didn't demote Rojas.

Weston Wilson, who opted out last season, could be used in the infield rotation, but that impacts another arbitration-eligible player in Edmundo Sosa and Kody Clemens, who is out of options and in the major league season would have to stay the whole year, otherwise he would be threatened with a waiver.

None of this should diminish their willingness to add Soto, but it will factor into Philadelphia's decision-making.
