Nets blow out Grizzlies on the road behind Schröder's 33 points

The Brooklyn Nets returned to the winning ways with a tough 119-106 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Without Nic Claxton, the Brooklyn team's problems persisted throughout the season, but the stable performances of their biggest stars outweighed the problems.

The three-point shot on Tuesday night against Memphis didn't carry over into the first quarter, but the tight refereeing did. In the first two minutes of the game, Ben Simmons was fouled twice and head coach Jordi Fernandez was given a technical penalty for dissenting from an offensive foul on Cam Thomas. Nothing seemed to be going right for the Nets, as they were beaten inside by Zach Edey until the end of the quarter.

A steal and slam from former Grizzlies forward Ziaire Williams provided momentum for Brooklyn, which went on an 18-5 run to end the quarter. The Nets scored on seven of their last nine attempts, including a three-pointer and an alley-oop finish for Noah Clowney. Even without a starting center, Brooklyn had a 34-29 lead early in the second quarter.

Williams' fingerprints were all over the next 12 minutes, and although his deep ball didn't fall early, he converted several fastbreak dunks. Brooklyn showcased Fernandez's fast-paced offense and forced Memphis to commit 15 turnovers in two quarters. But the Nets only used 10 points from the mistakes and were unable to extend their lead.

The teams traded baskets down the stretch as Edey continued to feast inside and Jaren Jackson Jr. came in hot from the other side of the arc. The Grizzlies' frontcourt duo combined for 31 points in the first half, but thanks to solid performances from Thomas, Dennis Schröder and Cam Johnson, Brooklyn had a five-point lead at the halftime siren.

After the break, the Nets experienced early highs and late lows. Brooklyn went on a quick 8-0 run to extend its lead to as many as 14, but from there it began to unravel. Just when the Nets seemed to have Jackson Jr. and Edey under control, Brandon Clarke showed up.

The 28-year-old Memphis forward provided an instant spark off the bench and crushed Brooklyn in the stadium. Whether it was a sharp cut from the baseline or perfectly running his lane in transition, his contribution put the Grizzlies back within striking range. A nearly five-minute scoring drought in which Simmons picked up his fifth foul didn't help the Nets' chances of maintaining their once-comfortable lead. At the very end of the third period, Keon Johnson was assessed his second technical foul, shortening his night to just 16 minutes. Despite the dramatic collapse, Brooklyn still had a lead with the final verse left to play.

Unlike their previous losses, the Nets did not allow a difficult third quarter to decide the outcome of the contest. The offense came back to life, thanks largely to Jalen Wilson's consistent play and a continuation of Schröder's monstrous 33-point night. Memphis simply had no answer for Fernandez's balanced attack, allowing the rookie head coach to clear the bench after securing the victory.

In their first appearance since Brooklyn's victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Tyrese Martin, Jaylen Martin and Cui Yongxi completed the win for the Nets. At the final buzzer, five Nets had scored in double figures and Williams got the last laugh in his revenge game.

Brooklyn is currently 2-3 and returns to Barclays Center on November 1 to face the Chicago Bulls at 7:30 p.m. EST.
