Because of this, public school students in New York will only be on campus four days per week for the next three weeks

Due to several upcoming days off, New York City public school students will only be on campus four days per week for the next three weeks.

Students will first enjoy an upcoming three-day weekend as schools will remain closed for Diwali on Friday, November 1 – the day after Halloween, according to the Department of Education's (DOE) academic calendar

Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the most important events celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. It is celebrated in October or November as per the Indian calendar. This year it starts on November 1st – with five days of celebrations.

Next week, schools will also be closed on Tuesday, November 5th for Election Day. This will allow many schools to open as polling stations.

This means students will go to class on Monday, November 4th and then return on Wednesday, November 6th for the remainder of the week.

And students can look forward to another three-day weekend the following week – as schools will be closed on Monday, November 11, for Veterans Day.

Observed on November 11 this year, the federal holiday is a day to commemorate the end of World War I and a time to honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The DOE public school calendar allows for about two dozen days off between the first and last day of classes. The calendar provides time off for religious holidays, week-long breaks for winter break, winter break and spring break, and federal holidays.

For those looking further into the future, there are plenty of days off before the end of the year.

After these three holidays, students will have no free time until Thanksgiving break, November 28-29. The last day of school before this break is Wednesday, November 27th. Children will return to campus on Monday, December 2nd.
