Everything we know about traffic stops related to Detroit Lions' Jameson Williams

DETROIT – Here's everything we know so far about a traffic stop involving Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, where police found two guns in the car.

Details from lawyer

Todd Flood, an attorney for Williams, released a statement sharing some details about the incident.

Williams, 23, and another of Flood's customers were apparently stopped for a traffic violation in Detroit on October 8, 2024.

Officers said there were two handguns in the car. Flood said both weapons were properly registered and the driver (not Williams) had the appropriate privileges to carry those weapons.

Flood said Williams and his other client were “cooperative and respectful” of police.

Here is the full explanation:

On October 8th, my clients were pulled over for an alleged traffic violation. During the stop, my clients behaved both cooperatively and respectfully towards the police officers. The two pistols found in the vehicle were both properly registered and the driver in the vehicle was authorized to carry them. We have cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so

Detroit police respond

Detroit police have launched an investigation into the traffic stop and said Tuesday that “new information has come to light.”

This investigation appears to focus on why Williams was not taken into custody after the weapons were found.

“No one in the city of Detroit is above the law,” the statement said. “Anyone who commits a crime will be held accountable, regardless of their position or status.”

Here is the full explanation:

This investigation is evolving and new information has come to light, which we are actively addressing.

We take every investigation seriously, especially when new allegations and facts emerge, and are committed to acting quickly and transparently.

As new facts are confirmed, we will make necessary changes in our decision-making process.

To be clear: No one in the city of Detroit is above the law. Anyone who commits a crime will be held accountable, regardless of their position or status.

Statement from the Detroit Lions

The Lions also commented publicly on the situation. A statement said Williams had informed the team about the incident.

“We discussed the incident with him and kept the league updated on our findings,” the statement said.

The Lions said Williams was released without charges or citations. They also confirmed that Detroit police are reviewing the case.

Here is the full explanation:

Jameson immediately alerted us to the fact that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and kept the league updated on our findings. We believe he was released without incident or citation. Based on our current knowledge, the Detroit Police Department is reviewing the matter. Jameson has retained an attorney and we will have no further comment out of respect for the legal process.

PED suspension

The traffic stop in question occurred about two weeks before Williams was suspended for using a performance-enhancing substance.

Williams released a statement on Oct. 24 saying the PED violation came as a complete surprise.

He missed last weekend's game against the Tennessee Titans and will also miss Sunday's battle for first place in Green Bay. He will be eligible to return the following week when the Lions travel to Houston for Sunday Night Football.

This is the second suspension of Williams' young NFL career. He missed four games in 2023 due to a violation of the league's gambling policy.

Breakout season

These off-field distractions have interrupted what seemed like a breakthrough season for the third-year wideout.

Williams caught 17 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns in the first six games.

He's a key reason the offense was one of the best in the NFL, giving the Lions a 6-1 start – their best in franchise history.
