Brooklyn Dodgers memories: Superfan, county historian remembers watching Jackie Robinson play at Ebbets Field

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (KABC) — The Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.

It was a heartbreaking time for Ron Schweiger, a Brooklyn Borough historian who has fond childhood memories of watching the team play at Ebbets Field.

Back then, of course, the games on television were shown in black and white.

Schweiger remembers that when his father first took him to Ebbets Field, which only held about 36,000 fans, he was amazed at the bright colors.

“When we got to the top of the ramp and I caught my first glimpse of the field, I stopped abruptly,” he remembers.

“My dad said, What’s going on? I said the grass is green. It was the greenest grass I’ve ever seen.”

His fondest memory, of course, is when the Dodgers – especially Jackie Robinson – defeated the Yankees for the World Series title in 1955.

“Cars honking and everything. People are standing outside banging their pots and pans. The Dodgers win the World Series! Chaos.”

Then, three years later, they were gone.

With his team 3,000 miles away, Schweiger could no longer support the Dodgers.

But he also couldn't switch his allegiance to their longtime nemesis, the Yankees.

So who is he in this year's Dodgers-Yankees World Series?

“I don’t know who I’m rooting for. I’ll watch the game.”
