Anchorage will begin plowing residential streets Tuesday evening

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage Municipal Street Maintenance announced its snow plow crews will begin plowing residential streets Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Crews are currently picking out arterial and collection routes and will move into residential streets after 8 p.m

Crews will also be clearing snow from downtown streets overnight and are currently clearing sidewalks and paths from MOA.

A daily snowfall record was broken on October 28 – the 6 inches that fell on Monday surpassed the previous record of 4.8 inches set in 1982.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, 11.5 inches of snow was officially recorded in Anchorage.

It was also the first time in 18 years that Anchorage saw 6 inches of snow on an October day.

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance wrote in an email that after concentrating plowing crews on West Anchorage, where snow fell the heaviest late Monday night, the city had to begin replowing streets after more snow fell early Tuesday morning .

The mayor said 25 trucks were tasked with clearing downtown Anchorage overnight, followed by residential streets.

Anchorage drivers must contend with bumpy, slippery road conditions

Anchorage police said there were 46 vehicles in distress, 26 reported crashes and three additional crashes with injuries as of Tuesday afternoon. APD said these numbers were reported between midnight and 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The snow was heavy enough to close Anchorage School District schools for a day and force students to learn remotely.

The city also unveiled a new website where the public can view updated plow information and routes cleared after a heavy snowfall.

Updates and additional information can also be found on the MOA Street Maintenance website.
