How many World Series sweeps have there been and when was the last one?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are just one game away from defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series. If you're wondering when the last World Series sweep happened, good, because I had the same thought too.

Although the World Series is the highlight of the season, sweeps occasionally occur, but there hasn't been a single one on this stage in over a decade. The last time a team was defeated in the World Series was in 2012, when the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers.

In total it happened 21 times, and more than half affected New York. The Yankees have won the World Series eight times and been swept three times, including once by the Dodgers in 1963.

Here's a look at every 4-0 win in World Series history:

  • 2012: Giants over Tigers

  • 2007: Red Sox over Rockies

  • 2005: White Sox over Astros

  • 2004: Red Sox over Cardinals

  • 1999: Yankees over Braves

  • 1998: Yankees over Padres

  • 1990: Red on athletics

  • 1989: Athletics over Giants

  • 1976: Reds over Yankees

  • 1966: Orioles over Dodgers

  • 1963: Dodgers over Yankees

  • 1954: Giants over Cleveland Indians

  • 1950: Yankees over Phillies

  • 1939: Yankees over Reds

  • 1938: Yankees over Cubs

  • 1932: Yankees over Cubs

  • 1928: Yankees over Cardinals

  • 1927: Yankees over Pirates

  • 1922: New York Giants over Yankees

  • 1914: Boston Braves defeat Philadelphia Athletics

  • 1907: Boys about Tigers
