Albert Breer reported that Lions OC Ben Johnson wanted a job with the Bears last offseason

I woke up today still feeling dead/numb, but probably better than yesterday. Then I saw this. This is the kind of news story that lets you know that the Bears simply don't have the minerals to make this difficult decision. The expensive decision. The decisions are a bit tough, but the best for the organization. Stick with Eberflus, who has some positive traits but is clearly not a Super Bowl head coach at this point, OR…go for arguably the best coach in football (Harbaugh) OR…steal the best assistant coach of a division rival and pairing him with a rookie franchise QB. But no. Extend Eberflus so he can hire an OC who also has very questionable judgment and game rules.

I watch the Lions almost every week and only because I love their football. They bite kneecaps and stuff, but they also just play nice football. They run down your throat, hit you in the corners, attack you vertically and horizontally, and it feels like every single weapon on every drive poses a threat to score points. I would KILL if her mindset and OC genius were pulling the strings for Caleb Williams. The Lions are waiting until they are 30 years old to have fun with the gadgets. The Bears let them run, the game is on the line.

Ben Johnson is known to have stayed with Detroit to some degree out of loyalty, but perhaps he simply looked at the options outside of Chicago and decided to wait it out. That's the hope, right? Maybe Ben Johnson, who coached against Eberflus four times, has decided that this job is open again next year and I only have to move my family four hours west. Kick his ass two more times and Caleb Williams will belong to Ben Johnson.

I want to be optimistic. I truly believe this Bears roster is playoff caliber. I hope they see this potential. It seems to me that with this coaching staff, this group will always have a ceiling. The Bears are currently 4-3. The coaching staff and culture cost them two games. That could make all the difference at the end of the year. I'll hope for the best. I want them to win every game, but in the back of my mind I'm just waiting for Ben Johnson. He's the type of coach who can take us to the Super Bowl.
