North Carolina man finds $20 in parking lot, wins $1 million

A North Carolina man stumbled upon a $20 bill and decided to use it to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket – and it paid off in a big way.

Jerry Hicks, a master carpenter from Banner Elk, North Carolina, won $1 million after purchasing an Extreme Cash scratch-off ticket on Oct. 22, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The lucky winner revealed that he discovered the $20 by chance.

“I found $20 in the parking lot in front of the speedway,” he shared. “I bought the ticket with that.”

In another fateful moment, as he walked into the store in Boone, he learned that the original lottery ticket he wanted was unavailable.

“They actually didn’t have the ticket I was looking for, so I bought this one instead,” he said of the Extreme Cash scratch card. The unexpected turn of events led to him buying the $1 million winning ticket.

According to the press release, he submitted his ticket to lottery headquarters in North Carolina on Oct. 25 and was given a few options on how he could receive the cash prize. He was told he could either receive $50,000 annually for 20 years or receive $600,000 up front.

He chose the latter, which totals $429,007 after state and federal taxes.

So what does he plan to do with the money?

“We’re going to go straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they have,” Hicks said.

Regarding his long-term plans, Hicks shared that he would like to retire after 56 years as a carpenter and use the money to support his children.
