The Apple devices on which you can and cannot access Apple Intelligence

  • Apple introduced new Apple Intelligence features with iOS 18 on Monday.
  • Apple's new AI is available on all iPhone 16s, some iPhone 15s and M-series iPads or the iPad Mini.
  • Mac users with an M1 chip and higher can also access Apple Intelligence.

Apple's AI features have finally rolled out – but is your device powerful enough to access them?

Apple Intelligence, Apple's suite of AI features, began rolling out the latest iOS 18.1 software update on Monday. The upgrade will integrate AI into all devices and includes features such as AI writing tools, summaries and smart replies, an updated Photos app and a smarter Siri.

However, many Apple products do not have access to it. For example, while the new software is officially available on iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 and users will be able to access parts of the intelligence system in US English from Monday, only certain new iPhones can support AI.

If you don't own a brand new Apple device, you may still be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence. Here's a breakdown of which devices can access Apple's new offerings:

All iPhone 16s, some iPhone 15 models

Apple states on its website that Apple Intelligence is available in beta for all iPhone 16 models, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. You can also visit Apple Intelligence Access features on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

iPhone owners who update to iOS 18.1 can join a waiting list to enable AI in the Settings app.

Users with an iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15, and any of the following versions do not have access to Apple Intelligence features.

iPads with M series or A17 Pro chip

According to Apple's website, iPads with any M-series or A17 Pro chip can also access some of the first features. These include the iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini.

Anyone who has a standard iPad does not have access to Apple Intelligence features. Additionally, they are not supported on any version prior to the 5th generation of iPad Pro and iPad Air. All iPad Mini models except the A17 Pro also do not support Apple Intelligence.

Macs with M1 chips and higher

Macs with an M1 chip and later can access Apple Intelligence features with the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update. These include versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It also includes desktop versions of the iMac and Mac Mini. Apple's display computers, including Mac Studio, which uses an M1 Max and above, and Mac Pro, which uses an M2 Ultra chip, can access the new features.
