Early voting in DC begins as the 2024 presidential election enters its final stages

Early voting in D.C. began Monday and continues through Nov. 3 as the country heads into the final stages of the 2024 presidential election.

It's no surprise who DC will elect in the 2024 presidential race, as it is a historically Democratic city. However, there could be some surprises in how voters choose in the 2024 local DC ballot. This also includes whether voters decide in favor of Initiative 83.

Both Democrats and Republicans in D.C. have already spoken out against the initiative, which appears to pit the city's political establishment against the roughly 76,000 registered independents, according to the Washington Post.

Initiative 83 would do two things: open primary elections to thousands of independents and implement ranked-choice voting.

The district is currently holding closed primaries. This means that you must be a registered member of a political party to participate in that party's primary or nominating contest.

When it comes to ranked-choice voting in the district, that would mean that the candidate up for election would actually have to win at least 50% of the vote to win the race, rather than just winning a majority.

Several elected leaders and officials agree with implementing ranked-choice voting in the district but don't believe the measure should be included in the move to open primaries.

Important local races are also taking place, including the race for the seat of outgoing county council member and former mayor Vincent Gray. Gray recently announced he would abstain from voting on parliamentary votes and council matters, and revealed he was suffering from early-onset dementia.

In the District 8 race, Councilman Trayon White, who is still facing federal bribery charges, is expected to win re-election. Additional Council and Congress seats are also up for vote.

Early voting in DC continues through Sunday, November 3rd. Until then, polling stations will be open for early voting every day from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
