Early voting for the 2024 general election in D.C. begins Monday

Early voting is scheduled to begin Monday in D.C. — the last in the DMV to allow in-person voting before Election Day.

Early voting centers in the District will be open through Sunday, November 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In the meantime, mail-in ballots and drop boxes are active.

The 7News 2024 Election Guide provides more details on early in-person voting guidelines in Virginia and Maryland, where early voting has been implemented.

As of Thursday, more than 2.2 million voters had cast early votes across the DMV.

In the latest New York Times/Siena College poll, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied in the popular vote at 48% each.

“You can't imagine a race that's much closer than this one this time,” Steve Farnsworth, PhD, a political science professor at the University of Mary Washington, told 7News. “The polls have consistently shown a very, very close race – not just nationally, but also in the key swing states that will determine who wins the Electoral College.”

“I think it's very important to get involved,” said Daniel Galvao of Arlington, who voted in the United States for the first time on Sunday after recently gaining his citizenship.

“I’m originally from Brazil and voting is compulsory there,” Galvao added. “Here it is a different approach, but I think it is very important. And if you don’t vote, I don’t think you can complain much about what’s happening in the country.”

“It's a little nerve-wracking, but I'm hoping things work out in a way that I can look forward to the next four years,” said Lara Malakoff of Arlington, who also voted early Sunday. “If not, we’ll all move on.”
