The Penguin Episode 6 Review – “Gold Summit”: Cold One

The following review contains spoilers for The Penguin's sixth episode, “Gold Summit.”

The Penguin was a show that was flush with structure. Both new and old characters, storylines and new parts of Gotham history had to be introduced in order for the series to fit into the newly minted Batman Epic Crime Saga. And that's what long television is good for; This allows the smaller moments that wouldn't have made it into a two-hour film to survive the editing room. But I can only spend so much time putting the pieces together before I get a little impatient. There are many narrative moments in “Gold Summit” that needed a place to fit into the larger story of the Penguin, and some standout character moments for Eve and Victor came out of it. But when there's a cliffhanger at the end of every episode promising wild things to come next week, it can seem like we'll never actually get there.

At least this cliffhanger is solid. It finally feels like the tensions between Oz and Sofia are coming to a head in next week's penultimate episode, as Sofia, after finding out that Oz still has someone to lose, is finally able to get back at him for what he Alberto did. And if she does pull it off, the final duel will be full of emotion on both sides and I look forward to watching it all unfold. For now, though, it's an exciting moment and one of The Penguin's better unresolved endings, even if it's somewhat diluted by the series' over-reliance on the device.

Eve finally gets her time to shine in Episode 6, as the long-awaited confrontation between her and Sofia (which she's been telling Oz about again and again) comes in one of The Penguin's most tense and well-written scenes ever gave. It simply shows how smart and capable Eve is, and causes Sofia to reevaluate her initial analysis of the sex worker. The way Eve handles the situation really enriches the character, and the respect the two women feel for each other after their “Not so different, you and me” moment is really satisfying to watch.

This week, the time we spend focusing on Victor will be well spent. Although it doesn't do much in terms of plot, his storyline with Squid is important to his character. He really wanted to join in and instead Oz banished him to Francis' daycare. However, since the time jump in this episode, his role has expanded. The first half of “Gold Summit” does a good job of showing how much Victor enjoys his new duties and contrasts this with how he looks and feels at the end. The “action” wasn’t what anyone imagined and being a gangster might not be for him. We knew Victor was too good a person for this life, but now that he's seen what this life will do to him (and boy, was Squid's death scene brutal), maybe he'll have second thoughts about the future . If he even makes it out of this show alive.

For most of “Gold Summit,” the focus isn’t really on Oz, but he’s been a busy guy lately. With the time jump, Bliss business is booming and winter weather is approaching, which not only causes elements of Oz and Sofia's plans to be implemented, but also gives Oz a good excuse to wear a heavily comic-inspired pea coat. But with everything going well, Oz knows that without help he will never be able to move forward with the combined forces of the Maronis and Gigantes. In perhaps the biggest plan of his career – and just to show once again that communication manipulation is his superpower – Oz rounds up the various other gangs of Gotham and treats them to a few cans of the fictional Tricorner Gold Ale. The Penguin goes out of his way to demonstrate Oz's ability to talk his way back and forth about whatever he wants, but that's quite an achievement. The execution of the scene isn't entirely convincing – it's hard to see how or why Feng Zhao became convinced of Oz's plan – but the series has set the precedent of people being susceptible to his manipulative methods, so I guess you can understand this.
