Matt Eberflus: When you lose a game like that, it's hard to digest

The Commanders' prayers were answered to close out Sunday's game against the Bears as receiver Noah Brown intercepted a tipped pass in the end zone for a walk-off, Hail Mary touchdown.

This came after the Bears took a 15-12 lead on a 1-yard touchdown from running back Roschon Johnson with 25 seconds left.

But Jayden Daniels ruined all that when he scored a 52-yard score that was tipped into the crowd and went straight to Brown in the end zone.

“When you lose a game like that, That's hard to swallowChicago head coach Matt Eberflus said after the game, adding he was proud of the team for fighting to get back into the league. “It’s important to pay attention to that too.”

But how in the wide world of sports could the Bears fail to defend that pass?

“It comes down to the last play and we’ve practiced this play 100 times since we’ve been here,” Eberflus said. “I have to look at how it was implemented, but we have a body on a body and box the guys like basketball at the very end. We have a guy who stands on the edge and knocks the ball down. We have a back tip guy who goes behind the stack.

“So I have to look at it again and explain it in detail and make sure we are better next time. But that's hard to lose too. But again, I was proud of the way the boys fought the whole time.”

The Bears only rushed three players on the final play, which probably didn't help since Daniels had all day to throw.

“It’s certainly an option,” Eberflus said of potentially sending additional rushers. “I’ve seen people do that. We have that. But we decided on the three-man rush.

“Again, I think he did it over 12 seconds. I'm not sure what happened there as far as blocking and chasing the quarterback. … But as I said, execution.”

So how do the Bears ensure this loss doesn't continue into the future?

“I think you need a strong spirit and a strong conviction about who you are,” Eberflus said. “It’s a game, right? I know if you lose in the last game it will hurt, right? But let's go back and look at the tape and get better at it. That's what we always do. That’s what we’re going to do here.”
