The Lakers could surprisingly trade for the Nets' talented scorer before the deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers will inevitably secure a scoring guard or wing before the February deadline, but who?

JJ Redick's ballclub has already been linked to names like Zach LaVine, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Lonnie Walker IV. Even the Knicks' Deuce McBride could be on the Lakers' radar.

Another name to keep an eye on when it comes to Los Angeles is Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets.

Thomas did not agree to a rookie extension with Brooklyn, meaning he will be eligible for a new contract this summer. Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus estimates that this deal will be worth about $100 million over four years.

“Last year, Thomas averaged 22.5 points per game,” Pincus said. “With the Nets rebuilding, he may have the green light to score for most of the season (though that probably won’t lead to many Brooklyn wins).”

“Thomas is scheduled to be a restricted free agent with a cap hit of $12.1 million. The Nets can give him a more significant deal after using their generous cap space. If the team decides not to keep him, only the Wizards will expect to receive a reasonable salary.”

“Otherwise, Thomas would be obligated to the Nets to sign him and trade him to a viable club – which is hard to imagine with a full season of basketball before that decision has to be made.”

“It will be fascinating to watch how the Nets use their influence as the only real team with money this summer. Thomas would likely seek $25-30 million per season, but Brooklyn may be able to get him at a relative discount for a 20+ point scorer.”

Thomas started the 2024-25 season with a bang, dropping 36 points against the Atlanta Hawks on 7 of 13 from three.

Since entering the league, Thomas has proven time and time again that he can be a great scorer against anyone.

Will the Lakers find a way to sign Thomas this season even if they can't afford to re-sign him next summer?
